The public has until Monday to give their feedback on a new project offering pedestrians and cyclists better commutes through downtown and to the Bow River.

Called the RiverWalk West, the initiative will link Fort Calgary to the west end of downtown and is guided by five purposes, including creating a pathway system from Eau Claire to 14 Street S.W. that offers more green space and reorganizing the use of fragmented patches of land owned by the city.

The redevelopment will also make the area’s flood mitigation provisions compatible with city standards and improve its stormwater management. Ultimately, the city envisions this project “to create a vibrant, high-quality riverfront destination, with park and pathway amenities.”

To come up with better designs, the city held a competition in May among industry professionals. It has shortlisted five players: Dub Architects + Hapa Collaborative, ground3 Landscape Architects, Public City Architecture, space2place landscape architects and W Architecture & Landscape Architecture.

The next stage involves feedback from the public on their vision for the project. Questions revolve around greenspaces, the public’s desired experience of the future pathway and opportunities to create a better connection between Downtown West to the Bow River.

The deadline for those comments is 11:59 p.m. on July 31.

Subsequently, the team with a design idea that closely matches the public’s needs will be selected as the winner of the competition and will be responsible to lead the project’s design.
