Create a sustainable green purchasing plan for your school district.

On Sept. 19, the Center for Green Schools hosted a webinar, “Healthy and Sustainable Purchasing for Schools,” highlighting ways school systems can get started creating a green purchasing program. Panelists from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) and Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) joined to share their insights and experiences on the topic, from EPA’s product labels and certifications, to the benefits of buying green cleaning products, to strategies for district-wide standards for purchasing to reduce waste, improve health and save money.

The five Es

For those just getting started in their journey, KCPS reflected on what the process was like for them as they set up and launched their green cleaning purchasing plan. They suggested following the five Es when getting started:

  1. Engage: Touch base, understand, identify and connect with stakeholders (think parents, students and staff). What do they need? What are their concerns? What would best serve them? Read more.
